Bonipak Partners With Stellar Energy to Install 1.3 MW State-of-the-Art Solar System
1.3 MW solar array to offset approximately 50% of Bonipak’s energy needs
Bonipak, one of the nation’s largest growers and processors of fresh vegetables, partnered with Stellar Energy, a leading provider of commercial solar systems to California’s AG industry, to complete a 1.3MW ground-mounted solar system. The system is expected to offset approximately 30% of Bonipak’s electric usage and designed to maximize financial and environmental benefits.
The project will pay for itself in four short years and save Bonipak $10 million in electricity over the next three decades. The project will also save approximately 45,000 tons of CO2, and 14 million gallons of fresh water over its life… water that would have been used to produce electricity from fossil fuels. Bonipak was recognized by the White House on May 9, 2014 as one of the Country’s top leaders choosing solar power as an energy source.
Utilizing the most advanced in technology and building technique, Bonipak’s solar system includes a 1MW central inverter as well as several string-level inverters. The entire array is mounted into the ground via driven I-beams (no concrete), so at the end of its life, it can easily be removed and recycled. Additionally, the solar field was designed to integrate with Bonipak’s aggressive water management plan and is surrounded on three sides by eco-friendly bio-swales which capture and clean 100% of Bonipak’s cooling water and storm water.
“It should come as no surprise that the Agricultural community continues to be a strong adopter of solar” said Ted Walsh, President of Stellar Energy. “The success and stability of California’s agriculture market could not be more important. Companies, such as Bonipak, are producing most of the nation’s fresh fruits and vegetables, employing entire communities and sustaining our economy. The very nature of their business ties them to our most critical environmental issues. The leaders at Bonipak are very smart decision makers, employing the most advanced technologies to stay competitive in a global market, while utilizing and protecting their own natural resources.”
“Solar aligns perfectly with Bonipak’s core mission and values of sustainable farming practices and responsible land management” says Joe Leonard, Bonipak’s CEO. “We are committed to being leaders in the field of responsible agriculture and are excited to produce our own electricity in a very reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly manner.”
