Jordan Vineyard & Winery is one of Sonoma County’s most prestigious family owned wineries, famous for their elegant wines and culinary excellence since 1976. The property features the iconic Jordan chateau, inspired by the great estates of France and overlooks 1,200 acres of rolling hills and vineyards.
Stellar Energy was selected to design, engineer, and install a fixed tilt, ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) power system. The 454 Kilowatt (kW) DC solar energy system is composed of two separate solar electric arrays and consists of 1,932 Sharp solar modules, 1 Solectria inverter, and a DECK internet-based monitoring to measure and display performance.

This solar installation took place at an active winery, which required the construction teams to accommodate guests and policies to minimize disruption. The client specifically requested Stellar Energy’s engineers design a solution with the most efficient “Made in America” solar equipment available and a racking system to accommodate the hill side location. Additionally, the solar modules needed to be installed on the side of a steep hill. It required a custom design and digging deep trenches to support the weight of the racking and mounting structures. This allowed the maximum system size while accounting for shading and performance issues.
Stellar Energy worked closely with Jordan’s Director of Operations to locate the best location with enough space to fit the large array size. They chose a rocky hillside which was unsuitable for growing grapes. This location required deep drilling to install mounting foundations into the steep hillside, which allowed the solar modules to be positioned for optimal solar energy production. The project was completed on schedule and in time to allow the system to launch at the start of summer.
Jordan Vineyard & Winery is now able to produce almost all the electricity they require with solar, allowing the winery to save nearly $4.9 million in electricity costs over the next 30 years. The environmental benefits produced by the system include offsetting over 12,294 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next 30 years. (EPA calculator).
