ASC Profiles is an industry leading manufacturer of steel roof, wall, and structural roof and floor deck used in the construction industry since 1971. They have manufacturing operations around the United States and their building products are used in both homes and many of the largest commercial buildings in the world. They were attracted to solar energy as a way to reduce the high utility electrical bill at their manufacturing plant and headquarters in West Sacramento, California.
The roof space available to accommodate a solar installation was very limited, making the parking areas surrounding the warehouse a consideration. Solar carports and shade structures could be a viable option, only if they were tall enough to allow adequate clearance for their delivery trucks to pass through. In addition, any solar installation work would need to be coordinated carefully with ASC Profiles, to ensure their busy production and delivery schedule would not be interrupted.
Stellar Energy designed and installed a 296 Kilowatt (kW) DC solar photovoltaic (PV) power system. The majority of the solar modules were positioned on four elevated carport structures custom designed by Baja Construction Inc. The remaining solar modules were installed as a fixed tilt, roof-mounted solar electric array. Stellar Energy also worked closely with Energy Finance Company to arrange a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Baja’s carport structures were ideal for the location and high enough to allow ASC’s truck traffic to safely pass under. Through the PPA, ASC Profiles now uses solar electricity to power approximately 70% of their predicted annual energy consumption. The environmental benefits produced by the system include offsetting over 302 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next 30 years.* Source: http://www.epa.gov
