Salinas-based Taylor Farms has flipped the switch on a 763-kilowatt (DC) solar generation system on the roof of its Taylor Farms Retail salad processing plant.
The system, installed by Rohnert Park, Calif.-based Stellar Energy, is part of the grower-packer’s broader sustainability plan.
“Taylor Farms is committed to adopting cleaner energy and reducing its carbon footprint,” John Petroff, director of sustainability, said in the release. “The launch of our solar program is the result of a four-month installation and permitting process.”
In September 2012, Taylor Farms Retail also commissioned a fuel cell power system. For each unit of electricity generated, fuel cells produce 30% less carbon dioxide and use 99.99% less water than a conventional power plant, according to the release.
Together, the two systems are capable of supplying the salad plant with about two-thirds of its typical electricity demand.
Taylor Farms also is looking at installing an additional 1.5 megawatts of solar, according to a Stellar Energy news release.
Note: The solar system at Taylor Farms Retail salad processing plant will generate about 1 million kilowatts annually, equivalent to the yearly electricity use of about 100 households.
